Story

I am a huge believer in continuous learning and live my life such that I am constantly expanding my horizon and broadening my outlook. My appetite to learn was more than satiated during my time as a Business Intelligence Intern at Lennox international this fall.

Lennox international designs, manufactures and markets climate control products like Heating, Ventilation, and Air conditioning and refrigeration systems. The Company operates through three segments: Residential Heating & Cooling, Commercial Heating & Cooling, and Refrigeration.

At Lennox I was part of the Business Intelligence shared services team. The goal for Business Intelligence at Lennox is to create, foster, and support processes and tools that enable business-led, self-service analytics. The team is responsible in driving enterprise BI technology for the entire organization. This includes choosing, governing and socializing BI platforms like Qlik, Alteryx and SAP systems.

I worked on a project where I had to help out the residential marketing team in forecasting a project for their rebates program. The residential marketing team has two major rebates programs. Consumer rebates are rebates handed out to direct end consumers of Lennox products and SPIFF rebates are rebates to Lennox dealers who register for the SPIFF promotion plan to push Lennox products. The aim of this project is to forecast rebates for the summer rebates program to achieve the following goals:

• Gain foresight into rebates to be given out at various geographical and product hierarchy granularities

• Develop a BI framework that uses statistical algorithms to deliver business solutions that are both scalable and re-implementable

The key aspects of the project include Extraction / manipulation of data, development of a forecasting model, automating the whole process to make it re-implementable and presenting final forecasts in a dashboard. The project was brought to completion using the following technologies:

1) Oracle SQL Developer: This was used to extract and manipulate data from the 360 customer database in order to bring it to the required structure and format that will be used to develop forecasting models

2) R: R-studio was used to develop and fine-tune the forecasting models

3) Alteryx: This is the environment where most of the project comes together. The data extraction/ manipulation from oracle databases, the implementation of forecasting models along with the automation of the whole process with the help of workflows was done in Alteryx

4) Qlik: A simple QLIK app was created with the final results to visualize forecasted rebates so that the final user may gain insights from it

The Intern program was very well organized with a lot of information/learning sessions coupled with intern social events. I was lucky to work on a challenging project that allowed me to learn technologies, a new business domain and develop a product in a short time. All in all interning at Lennox has been a very enriching experience for me and I am excited to be back here for spring 19’
